Alexia Maccon, the Lady Woolsey, awakens in the wee hours of the mid-afternoon to find her husband, who should be decently asleep like any normal werewolf, yelling at the top of his lungs. Then he disappears; leaving her to deal with a regiment of supernatural soldiers encamped on her doorstep, a plethora of exorcised ghosts, and an angry Queen Victoria.
But Alexia is armed with her trusty parasol, the latest fashions, and an arsenal of biting civility. So even when her investigations take her to Scotland, the backwater of ugly waistcoats, she is prepared: upending werewolf pack dynamics as only the soulless can. She might even find time to track down her wayward husband, if she feels like it.
In the second installment to The Parasol Protectorate series Miss Alexia Tarabotti (now Mrs. Conall Maccon, Lady Woolsey) finds herself in Scotland to deal with yet another preternatural related problem, and ends up meeting her husband’s family in the process. Changeless by Gail Carriger is about the adventures of Mrs. Alexia Maccon and the strange happenings of the supernaturals becoming mortal without her touch. Her adventures take her on a trip with her best friend to hunt down her husband where she meets his great-granddaughter and the back she runs in Lord Woolsey’s place. Despite the fact that she is quite angry that her husband never told her about his family, she is still pleased he is alright.
Changeless is a wonderful second novel to this hilarious series. All of the colorful, lovable characters from the first novel made an appearance and there were new characters that join in Alexia’s charades (Madame Lefoux is not what Alexia and her dear friend Ivy Hisselpenny were expecting when they walked into the hat shop). Everyone is there, Ivy, Akeldama, Maccon, Lyall, and the rest. If it is at all possible, their adventures get even more chaotic with the wit and conundrums I loved from the first one, adding onto them to continue the story in a way that wanted me to read more.
The addition propelled the craziness of the nodded help to propel the novel with the rest of the series and added to the fun. Alexia is just as powerful and strong as she was in Soulless and maybe even more so because now she is married with a pack to control. She is at the top of her game and completely in her element. She even has a fancy job working on the Queen Victoria’s supernatural run council (and driving the potente crazy while she’s at it). The strength that comes through her character is a joy to read and one that is one to read.
Changeless by Gail Carriger is a wonderful second book in a wonderful series. Carriger extended the universe without losing any of the wit and charm that make The Parasol Protectorate one of my most favorite reads. Changeless is a wonderful novel if you like off the wall supernaturals and crazy adventures set in Victorian times. Carriger’s novel is a great time that I couldn’t put down, twice and one that I have recommended to everyone I know.
