review 1: A fantastic book exploring the rise of fascism in Germany (and in film making) through the rise of the eponymous heroine. No happy ending in this one, despite the fame Lilly garners through her work. The images in my head as I read this book were mostly black and white, which seems appropriate, given the subject matter. The lack of vivid description enhances this, and if things are described in light/dark polarities, it only serves to add a filmic haze to the whole. The nuances of characters are all filtered through Lilly, and they, too, take on the shadings of a black and white film, though all are well developed. In fact, the most remarkable thing about this book is how, despite the times, no character is flat, none either solely good or evil, victim or perpetrator. Ever... morey character is all of those things. Flawed characters (and they are all wonderfully flawed, damaged people) are treated with dignity and understanding, and what the book lacks in bright lights, it makes up for with compassion and understanding.
review 2: And when the final chorus faded and the last soldiers had passed, they heard it loud and clear – the unmistakable ticker of the camera.Last line from The Luminous Life of Lilly Aphrodite by Beatrice Colin. Enjoyed this novel, where Colin employs a biographical format to share a slice of the past. Using a fictional character, Lilly Aphrodite, she gives an account of Berlin from the close of the 19th century to the end of WWII. Lilly Aphrodite’s a likable character and despite the hardships life throws at her, you don’t feel sorry for her. Lilly’s story was made interesting by the fluctuating setting, which provided an exciting and well researched backdrop to the story.P.S. Liked the pictures at the beginning of each chapter. less

A good read in general. However, the narrator was a little too distant.
