review 1: Great collection of vignettes with a matter of fact, easy tone that suits the setting of these stories. The characters are compelling and very real, with a somberness to them that make you think about your own life as you read about theirs. Surprsingly, the story that was most resonant for me was the transplanted family from "Shelter," which takes place in urban Washington, D. C., and not rural Virginia. Well worth reading.
