review 1: 3.5 stars. I've been loving the podcast, so I picked up the GN. Other reviewers have pointed out that the scripts just don't work as well in some of these stories -- the best are the ones that use visual jokes rather than language jokes (e.g. Cactoid Jim going down the stairs). Without the actors, the characterisation is thinner; again, where the artists have conveyed attitude through posture/action (e.g. Croach, Red, Sadie), it works, but where this hasn't happened, it feels anaemic. Art-wise, there's a lot to like -- I think my favourites were Sparks, Cactoid Jim, and Beyond Belief. The old-time ads didn't do it for me; I've seen that schtick too many times in similar tie-ins, like the Pratchett Discworld Diaries. Overall, enjoyable because I like the podcast. If I didn'... moret know the podcast, I think I'd have a lot of trouble with it.
review 2: The Thrilling Adventure Hour is a staged production in the style of old time radio. It is performed and recorded once a month, and then released as a podcast. Each episode features three non-serialized segments as well as songs and commercials from fictional sponsors. This graphic novel gives a good taste of what the shows are like. It's a collection of short stories, each being a sample of the more frequently performed sketches from the shows. I recently found out about the podcast, and have run through their library of past shows, so I had knowledge of the settings and characters before picking up the book. A part of me thinks that this book could be a good way to introduce people to the recordings. At the same time, I wonder if because of my familiarity I wasn't able to spot parts where things weren't adequately explained for a first timer. Over all I really liked it. My only complaint is that more than a few of the stories were recycled from the show. So there were a couple of times where I had a moment of "Oh yeah! I remember this one". less
