review 1: This was my first Mikaelsen novel, and I chose to read it on a three-hour plane ride. I wasn't planning on getting absorbed in a story or anything like that; I just wanted something easy to occupy my time for two flights. I was quite surprised when I finished the novel with plenty of time to spare on my first flight. The story was fast-paced with an intriguing character who was both likable and loathe-able. Really, it is the main character that carries this story, as the plot itself is a bit bizarre and almost unbelievable at points.By no means do I think this book could be classified as classic literature. There were several convenient events to keep the story going, as well as several questions (at least in my mind) left unanswered at the end of the book. But pur... moreely on entertainment value alone, this work is worth a look.
review 2: Mikaelsen does it again! I so enjoy the way this author writes each novel with a unique plot, and builds in action, compassion, moral lessons, and learning about self. HIs books also appeal to both boys and girls, which is a plus. In Jungle of Bones, a young teen, Dylan, is taking out his grief over the death of his father by being defiant and disrespectful. His school performance is going down the drain, his relationship with his mother is fraught with arguments, he does not care about anything, and his life is generally headed in a downward spiral. When his mother has had all she can take, she hands Dylan over to his father's brother. Uncle Todd takes Dylan to the jungle of Papua New Guinea where the uncle's mission (now that he has retired from the Marines) is to find Second Ace, the plane that crashed during World War II with Dylan's grandfather being the only survivor. The grandfather stumbled out of the jungle, but the other soldiers and the plane were left to rot. Uncle Todd is determined to find the wreckage and the trip turns into much more than he or Dylan could have predicted. Suitable for grades 5-8 (some language, but nothing too offensive). less
