review 1: I just couldn't get into this story. Maybe I'm older than the intended group of readers but I don't see the joy in going out every night (even in inclement weather) and spray painting graffiti. I got about half way through and what I read was well written and the character development was good.I didn't rate the book because I don't want to give an unsatisfactory rating for something that is probably a good read to specific age groups.
review 2: I'm typing this mere seconds after finishing the book, so this is fresh, if slightly livid stuff. Right to it then. Fletcher can be a real gargantuan arsehole. He is narcissistic, egotistical, revengeful and too mouthy for his own bloody good. He should also be writing a rather detailed guide on "How to be a Heartbreak
... moreer", since he's a writer and all. But I liked him enough to feel sorry for him when massive amounts of excrement hit the industrial-sized fan. I think I even loved him a little at certain points. Matteo's a sweetheart, an artist. And a little bit bonkers. You could say he is the actual protagonist, even if it's Fletcher that does the narrating. You could even say that the book centers around Mateo and Fletcher's relationship, but I'm feeling too heartbroken to admit it. Cara is Cara. If she was in the room I'd throw my Kindle right at her bloody face, with all the force my puny, spaghetti arms could muster. It is she that angers me the most, out of every single character in the book. She is Fletcher's "girlfriend", and on a long albeit bumpy relationship with Jamar, Fletcher's college roommate and best bud. There are many well fleshed-out characters in here, and all them flawed in one way or another. That's what makes them real I suppose. I liked Ollie. I kinda felt he'd be important, long before finding out his name. There's also Boston and São Paulo, described with such loving detail, they're as living and breathing as any person in the novel. Trying to "assign" a proper rating took the best part of an hour. I think ratings are stupid. There can't be a perfect rating since there is no such thing as a perfect book. Then again, any book that incites such a wide range of emotions as mightily as this particular work does, there is no marring it with a bad rating. I'd hate to dissuade anyone from reading this outright brilliant book. Ben Monopoli, you evil mastermind, you with your utterly unexpected twists, you sure liked stomping on my heart with this one. Pray we never meet, for if our paths ever cross, expect to be slapped. With a feather. One of those fluffy ones that tend to poke out of the Ikea cushions. I hate you. I'm off to buy everything you've ever written. P.S. HEART IS BROKE... less
