review 1: I have read all of the books by Ellen Hopkins except for the very recent one, Triangles, which we ordered about a week ago. I have all of them at my house and she is by far my FAVORITE author. Impulse would probably have to be one of my favorites. During this book, there are three main people who end up becoming really good friends at Aspen Springs, a psychiatric hospital. They are all there because of failed of suicide attempts. They all have way that they think they can get over the pain in their lives. They all come together and try to find the path to a better life together. But can they all do it? You'll have to read it to find out. Two of my favorite quotes from this book are, "Love means holding onto something just as hard as you can. Because if you don't, one blink... more and they might disappear....forever." The other is, "Grandma once told me it's easy to overthink love, to dissect it and question it until it is no more." Those quotes just mean a lot because of the message they are trying to send out. I loved this book because it showed what true friendship can do, and how much certain people can take before they are pushed over the edge. I did not dislike anything about this book. I would rate it a 5/5. More if I could. I definitey recommend it.
review 2: I loved Crank and Glass. Hopkins writing style is beautiful and genius. This was a second read of Crank and it took a second read to appreciate the poetry and style. If you read the lines across, they are beautfil, but how clever to have an additional poem when reading the words downt he page as well.Crank and Glass were a smooth quick read for me. I enjoyed reading Bree/Kristina's story and it held my interest. Fallout did not. Something was lost in that book for me and I didn't finish it. I am assuming all the stories of the children would merge eventually, however, each of their stories was boring and not as compelling as the story of their mother. While these are books for adolescents, I first read them to keep current with what my middle school students are reading. However, if you are an adult, don't discredit adolescent literature, it has come along way since we were teens! less
