review 1: The book I read was Prodigal Summer. It is one I could read time and again and learn something new each time. Beautifully written with intelligent insight into human nature and its impact on itself and the species we share the planet with. Thinking more about it, this novel also speaks of balance in all things. I can't put this one out of my mind. Oddly enough it took a bit of time to engage with the story. But once caught, I found myself thinking about it's content between readings. It's not a story to race through tho....
review 2: I actually read Prodigal Summer. I have read all of her other books. The Poisonwood Bible is one of my favorites and I teach the Bean Trees. This novel reflects the author's love of her home in Kentucky. The story alternates betw... moreeen a loner female Park Ranger who meets a mysterious stranger, a city girl who has married into a farming family who don't understand or accept her and an older man and women who are neighbors but can't be more different. The alternating storylines kept my attention and there were beautiful descriptions of nature. All the characters are struggling with relationships and where they fit in but are all strong and independent as well. For those who need to know: one of the storylines has quite a bit of "sensual detail" but I think it was well done and didn't bother me. I was sad when I finished this-a sure sign of a good book. less
