review 1: This is the first history book I've read about a time that overlapped American History. Having already read the biographies of FDR and Truman, it was interesting to read the British perspective on Americans. But like so many other biographies I've read (except Franklin's), Churchill is another larger-than-life specimen that reminds us that even if the times can shape the man, sometimes the man can shape history.During the chapters on WWII I was reminded how similar Churchill and Lincoln were--neither could find a general willing to fight, willing to go the extra mile, or willing to pursue the enemy. Eventually, just as Lincoln found his general in Grant, Churchill found his ... in Eisenhower.A great read, a great perspective, and a great reminder on how great each of us cou... moreld be.Highly recommended.
review 2: This is not an ordinary biography. I saw several interviews with Boris Johnson in which he said the purpose of this book was to reintroduce Churchill to contemporary people. In this, he was successful. The book is cleverly and entertainingly written among various travelogues, where Boris visits places that were relevant in Churchill's life and describes a period or characteristic about him. Mr. Johnson has been successful in his defense of Churchill as a uniquely great man, who saved the West and has impacted the world we live in today. In our world of disappointing officeholders, even critics should recognize he was a great leader. I was most impressed by his ability to pick himself up after a huge political failure (he had many of these). This book is not a quick comprehensive biography on Churchill, I still plan on reading a series that encompasses his full life in chronological order, but it gets to the gist of who he was. And why so many people still love, admire and respect him. less
