review 1: I did not like the hero. His widowed mother finally finds happiness with a new man, and the hero decides he's going to break them up and pick a different husband for his mother. He has no evidence that his mother's flame is a bad guy--he just want to be the one to pick her new husband. Argh.The heroine is being courted by a kind man who intends to offer marriage--a marriage that will greatly improve not only the heroine's situation, but her two younger sisters' as well. But the hero decides he wants the heroine for himself (as a temporary mistress) and won't leave her alone, even when she repeatedly tells him to stop pursuing her. As if it's okay to ruin a young woman's life just because of his own selfish desires. Blech. The hero had lots of charities and good causes, but... more it couldn't make me like his attitude towards the women in his personal life.
review 2: Alexandra put aside the love of her life to keep her family together after the death of her mother. As her father drank more and more, and gambled their money away, she worked as a seamstress as their station in society went further down.Stephen grew up with an abusive father. Learning he was also a bastard, increased the pressure on him, making him withdraw even further. Even knowing his real family did not lessen the burden in his mind of what had been beaten in to him. Saving Alexandra at a ball made him start to feel. Unable to handle the situation, he believes her to be lying to him and casts her out. An incredible story. Very enjoyable. less
