review 1: I really liked this book. Writing from multiple points of view was a good idea here, to give perspective from the Indian point of view as well as the white Canadian foreigner's. The abuse women are willing to endure in the name of family is astounding. Although the loose ends were neatly tied up at the end of the book it was ok, because I cared about these women. Hearing about India from a westerner's point of view, just like in The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, makes me want to, and not want to, visit India.
review 2: I liked learning about the culture of India in present day - and how vastly different it is from what I thought. India is very much a family centered culture - - life, work, food, education are all centered around what works best for the family.
... moreThe downside is that if you have no family, then your life/work/food and education prospects are sorely minimized. The story is loosely based on the author's experience which adds authenticity to the plot and her observations. less
