review 1: This was a wonderful story of love trumping society. I liked the mystery that is the basis for this story as well as the love story that follows through. The despicable characters were truly despicable which made them even better! There were enough bumps and turns that the story wasn't predictable. You figure out who is really the bad guy but then....you start doubting what you thought you knew and you just go back and forth until the true baddie is revealed. I loved how this book kept me guessing, I was completely glued to it from beginning to end!
review 2: Before reading this book, I thought I would be disappointed and that it would be the same as the rest of its genre. I put off reading it for many weeks, but it kept popping up so I decided that it was
... more time to read it. I am so glad I did, I am disappointed I left it so long before reading it. It was a refreshing story for this genre, and not like the others. It had a feel of a Jane Eyre novel at times, but it is a book in its own league. I couldn't put it down. The characters came to life with each page, and the book flowed. Rachel, the main character was strong willed and realistic, not airy like other characters in this genre. Truman, began of as a mysterious and feared/hated character, but throughout the book you grow to love him. The story progressed at a decent pace and I didn't feel that any part of the book dragged. It is a fantastic novel, and I would highly recommend it if you love a gothic, historical romance. less
