review 1: “I wanted sounds to be sounds and not a rush of colors invading my brain like a psychedelic avalanche.”—MiaMia is a normal high school senior with a bit of a sensory overload problem. Well, that little bit turns into a huge problem as she’s pulled into an inter-dimensional investigation headed by two hotties. A gift? Are they seriously telling her having her sense wires crossed makes her special? Well, it makes her special enough for those hotties’ bosses to want her to join their team. And they’re not the only ones wanting to recruit her—no is not an option. And then there are those who want her dead…“Mia, you are far from ordinary.”—RegulusI loved this book! Although this is billed as a young adult paranormal romance, this had the perfect blend of m... moreystery, suspense, humor, romance, and paranormal fun all targeted for a young adult audience that I wouldn’t mind my teen (if I had one) reading. There was more of a paranormal/sci-fi feel than romance, and after reading, I had to double-check if this was listed as paranormal romance or paranormal with romantic elements. I’d call it the latter (paranormal elements are because of dimensional travel and not magical elements) since although there was the start of something romantic going on, it wasn’t the driving force of the story. What we have instead are a bunch of mysteries as Mia has to deal with a missing brother and an inter-dimensional portal popping up on her property. Actually, the portal’s fine, it’s the beings crossing over that’s the problem. Luckily, there are a group of Men in Black type folks watching over those portals to make sure no unwanted visitors make an appearance and destroy earth. Easy job, huh? No. Not really. And it doesn’t help that there’s a someone on earth helping these beings come over.Oh Mia, and you just wanted to happily work on your science project. Well, luckily for her and earth, she does well under pressure and is a level-headed person. I loved her character and she’s definitely one of my new favorite heroines. She’s such a sweetie but a bit nerdy and fortunately tough enough to handle all the craziness dumped on her. And then there’s the fact that she has yummy Regulus’s attention. Well, technically she has some other unwanted attention from her best guy friend, but she does want Regulus’s.Speaking of besties, I loved the supporting characters, especially the Regulus and Arizona team duo. These two agents are opposites—broody Regulus and cheerful Arizona—but consider each other brothers. Those two have a great bromance! As for Mia’s friends, you’ve got to love how supportive her two best friends are although Austin—the one with aforementioned unwanted crush—may be heading to a whole lotta heartache as this series continues. After finishing the book, I’d say that it’s obvious it’s the first book in a series in that there are many unanswered questions and a blooming romance that needs to grow! However, there isn’t a dreaded cliffhanger, and I loved the ending and can’t wait to read more. In fact, I didn’t want to put the book down as I was reading—it’s fast-paced and the writing style made it easy to visualize as if a movie. I could totally see this playing on the big screen and I would so watch it. I would consider it a perfect afternoon read if you’re looking for something fast-paced and entertaining. This is going on my virtual favorites shelf! Overall, this is a 5 out of 5 for me!(Originally posted on my blog; I received a review copy in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.)
review 2: Firstly, i want to start on how great the book cover is. While it's not something special i really love it. Maybe because it looks so great, and it has been made for a self published author. I wish the book existed printed to buy it.This is a book that no matter then negative things you find around you like it. The story is so compelling and interesting, with mystery, fun and action that made not just go through the whole book but to love it too. I liked how the romance was in balance with the more serious part of the book, and the real plotline behind. It had its moments, which i loved each one of them no matter how predictable they were and it felt so real. It made sense to me. The author didn't force nothing in the story, but everything takes place in its right time. And even though the book is small, it fills you like you've read one of the big 400 pages stories. Now i said, there are negative things. I need to rephrase that into, things that didn't match with my style because they are not bad. I just don't prefer them. The thing that confused me more were the descriptions of the characters or better the lack of it. I prefer to have a good solid image on how the characters look from the first chapter we see them, so i can have a good image in my mind. Here you get them, at about 40 pages, some later. And next we have the characters. While i really liked all of them (especially Austin and Arizona..falling for those two!), there were times i wanted to punch Mia. One i remember really was, we were getting some answers to the questions and she was sarcastic all the time. I was like "please shut up and let them talk". The fact, that she sees her mistake though made me respect her. And second thing about Mia, how she always wanted to seem so strong and that she could handle everything and didn't want help. I could understand her at times but others seemed so childish.Still as i said, i loved the book. It was fast and kept me at the edge of my seat all the time. And maybe the not perfect main character, made it even better. I just know, that it's a book i can re-read and enjoy it from the start again. less
