review 1: This book should be read by all to understand that the media is what WE make it.My notes:Most adverse things that have been reported regarding this administration are usually met with: "who cares?" Or "it doesn't really matter" or "it's being blown out of proportion. Good ploys in this day and age...P.21 Potential printing press= our web-enabled cellular devices/phones. We literally ARE "the press".P.33 Trust but verify. All governments lie. The price of freedom is eternal vigilance. (Freedom isn't free.)P.35 Good point: journalists are like dogs-- whenever anything moves they begin to bark. Me: you just have to figure out when it's the right time to look up and take notice. It could be an intruder.P.48, 51 Things I knew before I read this book: don't trust polls in the me... moredia and a "safe" number is often used to estimate anything bad, whether people know the true number or not.P.64-71 More biases than I thought: commercial, status quo, access, visual, bad news, narrative, fairness...P.84 Reading about the atomic bomb drop onto Hiroshima fills me with an adopted grief which I felt after visiting the museum there when I was stationed there. It was devastating to experience what those families went through, the dedication of every mayor then to know entreating his neighbors not to test or use this bomb ever again. It's hard not to wholeheartedly agree.P.86 I hope that the lesson we learned through places like Hiroshima will never be forgotten, too...P.97 love it: "One man's news is another mans blah, blah, blah."
review 2: This nonfiction graphic novel provides great insight into the role of the media as it relates to politics, war coverage, social issues, and more. Brooke Gladstone is an award-winning reporter, editor and cohost for NPR. Here she is a tour guide through history as she discusses the role of bias, fairness and influence by the media. Chatty and witty in style, this is written by someone who works in that field and wants to equip readers with a better understanding of how people consume information. less

Illuminating read in parts, a little muddled overall. But a good book to pick up in general.

Pretty intense, but the graphic approach DOES help for clarity for a newb like me.
