review 1: Just read the recent memoir by Brooke Shields, about the complex relationship she had with her alcoholic mother. Touching at times and you can see how Shield's childhood was no picnic, but I do think she might be too quick to lay the blame for many things at her late mother's feet. And I also call BS that she got into Princeton---she may have proven herself once there, but her academic record before entering seemed average.
review 2: “There was a Little Girl: The Real story of my Mother and Me” by Brooke Shields, is a recollection of her mother Teri and also her own life as an actress in the spotlight. The read is at once tragic and poignant—recounting Shields’s rise from model to actress-all happening under the shadow of her mother’s problems with al
... morecoholism and her simultaneous fight to stand up for her daughter both as a mother and her manager. Shields grows up in a single-mother household, and she has no one but her mother to rely on as she goes through various career ups and downs and ultimately forges her own path. During her years managed by her mother, there was no long-term career strategy and Shields would take on roles simply based on the money and their compatibility with her schedule—a fact that she later regretted. After starring in a string of movies in her childhood and adolescence—as well as overcoming controversies stemming from a scene in “Pretty Baby,” and the Calvin Klein commercials—Shields takes a break, graduates from college, and finds herself lost—with her mother no longer able to guide her, as she did before. What I found most interesting were the stories of Shields’s celebrity dates (Liam Neeson, George Michael, etc.) though they were very brief, as the overall focus was on Shields’s relationship with her mother and not her personal life, despite the inclusion of these tidbits as well as some stories about Shields’s marriage to tennis player Andre Agassi. Perhaps the biggest lesson from the story is how personal demons can be very destructive if they’re not conquered in time—it almost feels like Shields’s mother becomes an alcoholic because of them, and is unable to overcome them despite her daughter’s success, which ultimately catapults them into the social world Teri had strived so long to be a part of. Overall, a well-written and introspective memoir. less

An interesting insightful memoir. Alcohol does such damage, so long-lasting and baffling.

As an ACOA myself, I found this bio honest and difficult.
