So many cool gals on the scene that it’s time to start featuring them! Arlene is one half of Cork’s Alliance Promotions putting on some of the best gigs in Cork and she DJs at various nights and venues around Ireland. I’ve asked Arlene some questions so we can get to know her a bit better… Name:​​ ​​ Arlene​ ​Murray Describe​ ​your​ ​style? Largely​ ​60’s​ ​influenced.​ ​I’m​ ​not​ ​one​ ​for​ ​heels,​ ​I​ ​usually​ ​stick​ ​to​ ​flats​ ​or​ ​chelsea​ ​boots​ ​and​ ​I’m quite​ ​proud​ ​of​ ​my​ ​shirt​ ​collection​ ​-​ ​patterned​ ​with​ ​big​ ​collars.​ ​I​ ​adore​ ​the​ ​mod​ ​look​ ​but​ ​I​ ​would​ ​find it​ ​challenging​ ​to​ ​dress​ ​like​ ​that​ ​every​ ​day. Go​ ​to​ ​piece​ ​in​ ​your​ ​wardrobe? Black​ ​sleeveless​ ​dress​ ​with​ ​large​ ​white​ ​collar​ ​-​ ​works​ ​for​ ​summer​ ​and​ ​winter! What’s​ ​currently​ ​on​ ​your​ ​turntable? I​ ​just​ ​bulk​ ​ordered​ ​jazz​ ​records​ ​so​ ​I​ ​can’t​ ​wait​ ​to​ ​receive​ ​those​ ​-​ ​Lee​ ​Morgan,​ ​Horace​ ​Silver​ ​and Duke​ ​Ellington.​ ​I​ ​also​ ​ordered​ ​Harvey​ ​Scales’​ ​“Love​ ​itis”,​ ​which​ ​is​ ​a​ ​belter​ ​so​ ​I’m​ ​very​ ​excited​ ​for those​ ​to​ ​arrive. If​ ​you​ ​had​ ​to​ ​go​ ​on​ ​the​ ​run​ ​and​ ​could​ ​only​ ​take​ ​3​ ​records​ ​with​ ​you,​ ​which​ ​ones​ ​would​ ​you grab? “Forever​ ​Changes”​ ​from​ ​Love,​ ​“Whats​ ​Going​ ​On”​ ​from​ ​Marvin​ ​Gaye​ ​and​ ​“Margin​ ​Walker”​ ​from Fugazi​ ​(dramatic​ ​change,​ ​I​ ​know!) What​ ​are​ ​your​ ​favourite​ ​spots​ ​in​ ​Ireland​ ​for​ ​listening​ ​to​ ​good​ ​tunes?​ ​And​ ​where​ ​would​ ​you go​ ​if​ ​you​ ​were​ ​in​ ​need​ ​of​ ​a​ ​serious​ ​dance? For​ ​the​ ​past​ ​6​ ​years​ ​I’ve​ ​been​ ​going​ ​to​ ​Under​ ​a​ ​Plastic​ ​Cloud,​ ​a​ ​60’s​ ​night​ ​in​ ​Cork​ ​city​ ​with​ ​all original​ ​vinyl.​ ​It​ ​was​ ​unlike​ ​anything​ ​else​ ​Cork​ ​had,​ ​until​ ​unfortunately​ ​the​ ​venue​ ​closed​ ​down recently​ ​so​ ​I​ ​hope​ ​it​ ​finds​ ​a​ ​new​ ​home,​ ​Cork​ ​really​ ​needs​ ​to​ ​have​ ​that​ ​kind​ ​of​ ​dynamic.​ ​It​ ​was​ ​the type​ ​of​ ​night​ ​where​ ​I​ ​felt​ ​really​ ​comfortable​ ​and​ ​I’m​ ​sure​ ​many​ ​of​ ​the​ ​regulars​ ​did​ ​too.​ ​I​ ​used​ ​to live​ ​in​ ​Dublin​ ​and​ ​the​ ​Garage​ ​Bar​ ​in​ ​Temple​ ​Bar​ ​was​ ​my​ ​haunt​ ​for​ ​a​ ​time,​ ​always​ ​guaranteed good​ ​tunes​ ​and​ ​good​ ​people​ ​in​ ​there​ ​also. How​ ​long​ ​have​ ​you​ ​been​ ​DJing​ ​for? Hard​ ​to​ ​say​ ​but​ ​at​ ​a​ ​guess​ ​I​ ​reckon​ ​it’s​ ​been​ ​about​ ​6/7​ ​years.​ ​I​ ​wouldn’t​ ​have​ ​done​ ​it​ ​very​ ​often​ ​at the​ ​start​ ​though,​ ​just​ ​here​ ​and​ ​there​ ​for​ ​occasions.​ ​Nowadays​ ​it’s​ ​become​ ​more​ ​frequent,​ ​I​ ​tend to​ ​stick​ ​to​ ​a​ ​particular​ ​set​ ​which​ ​can​ ​be​ ​hard​ ​to​ ​digest​ ​for​ ​many​ ​punters​ ​around​ ​Cork​ ​but thankfully​ ​I’m​ ​kept​ ​going​ ​with​ ​that​ ​and​ ​with​ ​Alliance​ ​Promotions​ ​gigs​ ​as​ ​well. How​ ​were​ ​your​ ​DJ​ ​slots​ ​at​ ​this​ ​year’​s ​Electric​ ​Picnic? It​ ​was​ ​unreal.​ ​Despite​ ​the​ ​weather​ ​people​ ​were​ ​out​ ​dancing​ ​and​ ​enjoying​ ​themselves​ ​and​ ​it​ ​was great​ ​to​ ​be​ ​there​ ​and​ ​have​ ​that​ ​experience.​ ​It’s​ ​also​ ​great​ ​when​ ​you​ ​know​ ​you​ ​can​ ​just​ ​about play​ ​anything​ ​and​ ​have​ ​a​ ​dance​ ​yourself​ ​to​ ​what’s​ ​playing.
