review 1: These are really powerful short stories. The writing style and content is uniquely masculine (which I suppose is to be expected), and incredibly moving. Machart has a great grasp of nuance, and his characters and settings really come alive with just a few sentences. Jack and I have been reading them together and although they're not exactly uplifting, the stories so far have still been very enjoyable. Definitely a recommended read!
review 2: Outstanding collection - right up there with the best I've read this year - Alan Heathcock's Volt, Miroslav Penkov's East of the West - to name a couple. Machart's prose style may seem plain, but it carries great impact.
