review 1: Interesting plot. Some of the characters fell into stereotypes (the bully, the mean girl, the evil teacher, etc) and I wish that the author hadn't opted for taking the relationship between Justin and Taylor through the typical "I hate you - now I love you because magic/promises/fate" routine. The writing was strong and the world building excellently done, which helped compensate for the "teen paranormal romance" trope. I think this story would have turned out somewhat better without adding in the romance.
review 2: Bryony Pearce has so many interesting themes going on in this book - bullying, ghosts, paranormal romance, a secret society and Egyptian mythology - you would wonder how well it would all hang together, but she has done an amazing job of achieving th
... moreis. Sixteen year old Taylor Oh was still only ten years old when she was afflicted by the family curse which was first visited upon her ancestor, Oh-Fa, by Anubis in the tomb of Nefertiti. The curse means that ghosts of murder victims seek her out and place a black mark on her so that she has to track down the murderer to pass on the mark before the Darkness claims her in place of the murderer. Because she has to be constantly on guard against this happening as well as tracking down murderers, she is shunned and bullied by most of her peers at school who think she is a freak. However, when Taylor comes up against the ghost of a boy(Justin) who had been in her class, she gradually uncovers a dangerous and controlling secret society in school which she has to infiltrate to save her own life as well as finding her relationship with Justin becoming more serious than she had ever thought possible. A convoluted tale which leaves the reader desperate for a further installment to see what will happen next. less
