review 1: Safe is a beautiful story about coming of age and falling in love, while trying to thrive in a sometimes hostile environment. Caleb is a strong character and the way he cares for Nico so deeply is heartwarming, even while Nico and his situation are breaking your heart. I thought the scenes where the boys discover each other physically were sensitively portrayed and conveyed their emotions well. Kennedy's writing is simple, yet elegant. I also liked how some of the side characters surprised both the MCs and the reader (in a good way). Like many reviewers, I wish it had been longer. I was not ready for it to end when it did. I also had a tough time with the use of present tense in the beginning and end of the story and past tense in the middle. I get the point, but ... moreit seemed a bit awkward.
review 2: I loved the book, but the writing seemed a bit awkward. I felt like I was on the outside of the story being told the sequence of events, rather than being inside a character's head and feeling his emotions as he lived it. BUT, this doesn't take away too much from the impact of the story itself. The boys were engaging enough that I did feel a connection and I wanted good things to happen for both Nico and Caleb. Overall, I enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to more books by this author. less

This is a rather cliched story with a rather tedious writing style. Not recommended.
