review 1: This was a nice book, nothing really amazing but good just the same. As an introduction to the characters it did a fairly good job but I really would have liked to get more background on everyone. Most of them were a bit flat because you never got to know them in the first place, which made it hard to care about anything that might happen to them. The plot itself was well executed though once again nothing was fleshed out enough to give any real impact to the story and then you get a secondary story that was not even hinted at taking center stage. Stella Mayweather is an orphan living in London and just getting by from day to day. When women start being murdered by burning she is horrified but not unduly touched by the situation. That is until she finds herself the target ... moreof these killers, who call themselves The Brotherhood. The Brotherhood are burning witches across Europe and Stella is the last witch out of London. She has been rescued by people she does not know and whisked away to another country to learn the skills which could save her one day. But there is something closer and darker waiting to claim her that she could not prepare for.I liked Stella, not just because she is the main character but because I got the most clear picture of who she was and what her motivations were. While it did not pull me in or make me feel like there was anything special, I gave it a chance to make me want more. And by the end of the story I did want to find out what happens next, though that could be because it ended on a cliff hanger. There was no major drama, some romance, some conflict. As I said a nice enough story that I hope to see open up and add some excitement along with more magic.
review 2: Stella Mayweather is different, since she was a child. Now as an adult her life in London is threatened, by people who want to burn all witches. She is whisked off to America, introduced to people like her. And, stashed in a safe house learning about her powers. She never knew what happened to her parents, she remembers very little about them. She is settling in and falling for her teacher, Evan. Only to be torn from her safe house at the hands of her parents killer. Her new friends either dead or long gone. Stella faces the killer head on, with not only her anger but her magic as well. This is an interesting story, of new witch hunts striking around the world and a witch's counsel that can not make decisions. Its up to Stella to fight and survive the evil she faces. less
