review 1: I really wanted to like this novel (and to finish it); I quite liked the author's storytelling style. I absolutely loathed the main character, though (I hate mean people, possibly especially if they think they're clever), and I kept wishing she'd either spontaneously burst into flames or that something fatally heavy would fall on her. So I skipped ahead to the end, and when I saw she was still alive, I didn't have the heart or the energy to finish reading it.
review 2: Evelyn comes from a long line of witches. While they appear human, their aging process is much slower, and at 149, Evelyn looks younger. In her "retirement", she enjoys creating a glamour and picking up one night stands. She lives in New York City with her sister, in a hidden building. She retur... morens for family gatherings to their hometown and we see some of the quirks of their lives, including puppets that hold the ghosts of their ancestors. When Evelyn meets Justin, she begins to believe that he may be the reincarnation of her great love, Jonah. We see in flashback her life as a spy during WWII and her efforts to build a relationship with Justin, complicated by the fact that she has used glamour to appear younger, something she can maintain only for a short time. As a secondary story, their is an accusation of murder against one of her family members, which Evelyn begins digging into. I loved the charming details of the world the author built, from the every flavor cake, to the travel via the loo, and the challenges of their magical existence. less
