review 1: This is a great read for those who loved John Green's work, The Fault in Our Stars! It's about an unlikely, tumultuous friendship that grows between a girl with cerebral palsy and a boy with his own hidden problems. Like the subtitle says, this is a story about two people who tell each other everything except what matters most. It is definitely a mature read but one that I would highly recommend to high school readers.
review 2: This book belongs on a short shelf of books that I wish to own by the dozens, that I may run alongside the road and press it randomly upon people and compel them to read. SO MUCH of this book resonated with me that the impulse to race through it was intermittently overwhelmed with the need to put down the book and sob. Or crack up. Or
... more lose myself in memory. Amy is a high-school senior with cerebral palsy, who uses a communication board and a computer to interact. Adults find her inspiring; her mother is determined that she will have a brilliant life of achievement. Amy wants to be a teenage girl. Matthew is a high-school senior with terrible fears. Careful routines keep his fears at bay. When he signs up to help Amy during the school day, he isn't really sure it's a good idea. This is not an inspirational story about the triumph of the human spirit. Except when it is. This is the most honest book about disability that I have read that doesn't descend into cynicism or wallow in stereotypes. Please read this. Please give it to young people you know who feel out of place, especially those who feel that way not just because they are teenagers, but because they really are different. less
