review 1: I was excited to read this because it was about dragon shifters/demons because I love that genre, but I was even happier I found this for free.According to 10,000 yr old demon/dragon shifter Haden Drake (who's totally hot and built like brick house, of course) he's finally found his mate. Mind you, he found her at birth but let her live a normal life which amounted to abuse and a gang assault for which he blames himself b/c he didn't protect her, but yeah he found her. Now I know Caylee's been through some tough crap, but seriously all this girl does is cry and go back and forth between trying to get rid of Haden and succumbing to letting him be pushy. At first she's afraid to be touched (rightfully so) but then she can't get enough. Is that how someone who's been assaulte... mored behaves? I don't know, but according to Haden all women are irrational and that's the only way they know how to behave. OK douche bag, you're 10,000 years old and you're used to women being treated a certain way but this is the 21st century and protecting someone does NOT mean not letting them make their own decisions. Speaking of which, being a demon of a particular breed Hadon has the ability to impregnate a female just by thinking about it. So without asking her, he does this to Caylee and she's OK with it?! Apparently she's so weak minded she can't even think about how sexist and wrong that is. Rape isn't always about sex (in fact it rarely is...sex is merely the weapon)- it's about taking something without asking and when you've just been knocked up by a man's thought (literally) you're back to being assaulted sweetheart. She goes from "I hate you, I never want to see you again, I want to live my own life" to mind blowing sex. I seriously wanted to slap this bitch for not standing up for herself more. Her best friend Mia has some semblance of self respect, but I will admit she's a bit too far on the other side. She's independent and strong willed but according to Haden it's only because she's a man hater. So women are nothing BUT irrational and if we're rude it's only because we hate men. Got that ladies? ::eye roll::Haden's friends Joseph and Zach aren't much better. Zach is the gender hater. He won't stay and fight because he doesn't want to lose to a woman (universe forbid!) and all Joseph does is antagonize Mia. She doesn't like Joseph so what does he do? Follow her around and make her angrier. Yeah, that's nice. Why because he 'likes' her? Hey, if you like a girl you DON'T be a douche bag. Mia wants nothing to do with you, leave her the F alone. The only guy in this book with any decency is Haden's brother Nick. He's the only one that finds his mate (by accident) and cherishes her. He's the only one to say "I am yours, and I'll cherish you no matter any decision you make" instead of the caveman " You are woman, so you are Mine (and therefore do what I say)!" Nick and Brianna have a very short part in this, and unfortunately it's the only part I liked and the only reason I'm glad I kept reading after even half way done. I'm curious as to how Nick and Brianna fare in later stories, but I honestly don't think I want to waste any more time reading this series...
review 2: I was incredibly annoyed at the start of this book. Being thrown straight into the action was confusing. I feel like I spent the first few chapters just trying to figure out what was going on. It is also very repetitive throughout the book.I did start getting into the story more towards the middle of tge book but then things went off the path again. The introduction of a secret fiance was strange. Overall I enjoyed the book, once I was able to catch up on what was happening. More background on the characters would have been nice before being thrown into everything. less
