review 1: Honestly, not exactly my cup of tea. I rarely read chick lit, so I guess I shouldn't even be reviewing this one as my opinion is not necessarily indicative of the quality of the book, but..oh well... It was a good way to kill a couple of hours on a Sunday afternoon and that's about it. Shallow plot, hollow characters, not much of an action for the reader to follow. The initial premise was quite interesting, but unfortunately the author failed to develop it enough in order to make it exciting. To me this book felt pretty inconsistent. The narrative was either dragging way too slowly or was being rushed up to a point where the reader would totally lose it. It did give me a few laughs--especially while trying to imagine two old ladies bullying an equally old man in an attempt... more to make up for events of half a century ago--so the book wasn't completely lost to me. I didn't hate it, so it was OK. Hope there are readers out there who would appreciate it more.
review 2: I've never described myself as a fan of the romance genre so perhaps what I'm about to say should be taken with a grain of salt...One thing this book has got going for it is that it's an easy read; it's rare that I actually finish a book in one sitting. Also, I've got to admit Phillips is good at writing scenes fraught with romance and love. Unfortunately that is where my praise ends. The mystery in this plot? SO DARN PREDICTABLE. The climax of the book? Uh, it never quite made it before it fell flat on its face. The characters' development, actions and motives? I NEVER FREAKING UNDERSTOOD THEM. And that at the end of the day, is my main gripe. Take for example: somewhere at the start of the book, the main female protaganist declares she's not romantically interested in the male lead. A few pages after that, HELLO PASSIONATE KISS. What. the. heck?! All in all, there are better romance books. less
