review 1: LIE made me angry. Very angry. And sad. I don't think I've ever had such a reaction to a book. Told in 10 different POVs, 5 adults and five teenagers, LIE is the story of a hate crime perpetrated by two popular, racist young men against two Latino young brothers. The older brother dies after being beaten by high school jock Jimmy while friend Sean watched. His girlfriend Skylar knows what really happened, but she has agreed to keep silent. Racism persists throughout these different POVs. At times I wanted to jump into the pages and shake the characters, particularly the adults, but mostly I felt sad that such attitudes really exist in our society.Having 10 POVs was an interesting strategy to tell the story of Jimmy's control and bullying, through the eyes of his peers, Lat... moreino coach, his father and the victim's mother and brother. I appreciated Caroline Bock's gritty use of racial insensitive verbiage to show the hearts and minds of the characters. I had empathy of certain characters, while hoping for severe punishment for others, LIE is a difficult, yet important read.
review 2: This book was one of the best books i've read, because I like their ways of portraying each character in another character's mindset. The ending was completely out of the blue and I kind of did expected it because of Skylar's fear in talking or telling the truth. Skylar and her boyfriend Jimmy got into some kind of trouble, as it was told it was bullying and attacking people from South America. Skylar not only is worried for Jimmy, but she also prays for him to get out of the jail, because Jimmy is 18 so he is put into the real jail and not the juvinelle. Skylar and Jimmy of course still loves each other and never lets each other go, but in between there are Skylar's bestfriend named Lisa and Jimmy's best friend named Sean. Lisa has a crush on Sean who only sees Skylar in his eyes, i think this relationship really stirred up their role in the story, but anywho Skylar is still loyal to Jimmy who protected her from everything. Jimmy was her everything, because when he arrived, she finally was happy. I will not spoil any endings here, because I thought this story is very interesting. Even though it is not plot driven, it is completely worth reading for, because in the novel Skylar's perspect and personalities are being altered through people's view on her and her reactions such as her inner thoughts. I really like the way the author wrote this book as I said earlier, because in this novel, every chapter is a new speaker and we can listen to the new speaker's perspectives and inner voice. This is extremely exciting for me to not guess everything and know everything beforehand. With those little clues, i was able to foreshadow the ending that was exciting but sad in a way. This was really a book i enjoyed. It is also a quick read for those that wants a book to bring along on the train or commute to places. less
