review 1: This book was only hard to read in regards to the fact that it's sad to think that there are actually people in the real world that mirror the characters. It portrays multiple viewpoints from people involved in a hate crime against two boys from El Salvador. Caroline Bock appropriately differentiates between each characters reaction. It includes a worried father who wants to distance himself from the crime so much that he doesn't even want to know the truth behind whether or not his daughter was involved. His daughter is upset about the situation, but her thoughts are clouded by her high school romance with one of the perpetrators. It's interesting how the whole time I read the book I kept thinking about the victims while the characters realistically pondered a million oth... moreer issues instead. The story really seems to grasp how egocentric human beings are.
review 2: I'm not sure what exactly to think of this book. On the one hand, I'm absolutely disgusted by the characters in this book. They're caricatures, every single one of them, even when the author tries to give them depth. And there are so many characters whose POV we skip between that it's impossible to connect with any of them.On the other hand, I think this book is a powerful reminder that racist, homophobic, bigoted people are still out there. Young ones, violent ones, and the problems won't go away unless a community can stand up and as a whole put a stop to it, rather than condoning it through sins of omission. less
