review 1: Parts were so truly excellent- the age gap between Foye and Sabine is portrayed clearly, with many small betraying gestures on both sides, down to Foye's contentment with domestic bliss and Sabine's restlessness. Other parts are absurd to nonsensical- do ruthless, wealthy Ottoman lords really personally track down wayward English girls because their shiny blonde hair is oh so captivating and harem worthy? You're really going to put your heroine into brownface? It's all the more intriguing because Jewel has clearly done much historical research, and it shows. But the underlying dynamics are classic orientalism.
review 2: When I began this novel little did I realize at the time this author would take me on a journey across several continents during a time whe
... moren in some places unrest and war might even break out with such adventure with the main characters Sabine and Edward who most would just call Foye. Disgrace has driven her from with her traveling then with her uncle. No matter she was innocent of such charges but in those times even a smallest hint of scandal could be a young girls ruin. Thank goodness for her uncle whom loved her very much too. On their travels they meet up with many people and one fine day they meet Edward whom as for fun she reads his fortune from the leaves in his tea. From that time forward travel with them and see a wonderful relationship grow between a giant of a gentleman and a darling beauty and not just on the outside either. They are faced with many trials though that prove to be quite daring after a grave misfortune happens and she is virtually taken hostage by one I call lower than a scum bucket type of man. Due to her ability as a writer she will keep you at times on the edge of your seat on how these two must outwit the scum bucket but before that even they have come to love each other more than even they realize at the time. The adventure you are taken on can and must be experienced to fully enjoy with the twists and turns they take at times. But the most delightful of all is they way you too experience the love grow between them that is so sweet. The passion burns with elegance that even though written for those times would be so desired even now and be most fortunate to have it. To my very delight is the surprises that kept popping up in the way this is written with refreshing storylines inserted. Expect the unexpected is what I guess I am trying to say with much delight while doing so. I myself was so warmed also by the way this novel is wrapped up with a way that warms you to your very bones. Received a copy for a honest review. less
