review 1: What I will say about this book is that it makes you feel, and not the kind of feelings that you would necessarily expect. I read it on one afternoon whilst soaking up the sun. Sure, some of it was a little unpleasant, some of it was incredibly graphic, but it was believable. It's not dressed up in any way, just simply telling a story about every day occurrences, and things that we have all done and felt. It was written in a slightly dis-jointed fashion, skipping bit's of the story, but I think that's what made it an easy read, no boring details to contend with. It was not what I initially expected and it's definitely not for every-one, but I really enjoyed it.
review 2: An enjoyable story about true Australian characters. No prettiness here. But thus made it e
... moreven more truthful. I enjoyed the sections of nature observations about bird life which where poetic and written in that form. They also served a purpose to add contrast and almost made the peoples lives an observation of nature. If you enjoyed this book then you would also enjoy Kate Grenville's novel Ideas of perfection. I believe a deserving winner of the Stella prize. less

Very sweet story of rural life in OZ, in the 1950's.
