review 1: I’ve sometimes thought about writing something inspired by my own fundamentalist upbringing, but was never sure I could do it without a generous dash of bitterness. Carys Bray has found a delicate balance between censure of her legalistic religion and tenderness for her characters. Her story is at once a chilling exposé of strict Mormonism and an affectionate recollection of the familiar childhood sense of security, belonging and ‘rightness’ that fundamentalism provides. The response of each of her characters when this ‘rightness’ is brought into question by a terrible tragedy, is something very recognisable to me. Only read it if you are brave enough to put your faith under a microscope.
review 2: Real, fully dimensional characters that I could rela
... morete to, but one need not have experience with the Mormon faith to connect with the reality this family faces. I'm being careful about the spoilers - be ready for a workout for your heart. Those with Mormon experience will appreciate additional layers of recognition. As a parent, I deeply felt all the emotions the protagonist goes through. Such a promising debut from a gifted writer. This was a good book, however there wasn't a satisfying ending!
