review 1: As if by magic, Annette Berowne seems capable of dazzling men from the moment she meets them. But when Annette becomes the primary suspect in her husband’s poisoning death, she arouses entirely different feelings. Now some men feel sorry for her while others are convinced she’s guilty.Jack Gibbons is a by-the-book, rising star at Scotland Yard. His friend Phillip Bethancourt is a smart, devil-may-care type with a good heart and a razor-sharp sense of people. When they reach the Berowne manor in Surrey, with its colorful coterie of staff and family, Bethancourt is strangely immune to Annette’s charms. As the two men delve into the case, Gibbons is sure Annette is an innocent damsel in distress. But Bethancourt is only certain of this: his earnest friend is falling in ... morelove-with a woman whose lovers keep finding ways to die.A not quite cozy mystery which I found very entertaining. The two lead characters, Jack Gibbons and Phillip Bentancourt, are very well fleshed out and are both quite believable. The mystery itself is well plotted out and there are plenty of suspects to keep you guessing. My only complaint is that I felt that Gibbons acted a little too foolishly with one of the suspects but even that didn't stop me from wanting to read more. This is really a nice book and I will be reading more of this series.
review 2: This is the first in the Bethancourt and Gibbon mystery series. I should've started with this one instead of reading the other two. The relationship between the two men is very complementary. They work well together to sort out what's what in a very complicated, detailed mystery.Chan has an easy, but traditional style of writing. It's full of rich detail and interesting characters, which is always a great way to tell a story. less

One day I will meet someone who enjoyed this book. Then there will be a murder worth investigating.
