review 1: Lucian Wing is a small town Sheriff. He insists is not a lawman but a Sheriff and with his dry wit and homespun common sense he is able to lecture the reader on the difference. His laid back persona results in him being underestimated and his critics see him as out of date and ineffective. His relaxed style is tested to the limits when a local yokel, unwisely, burgles the house of some newcomers, who turn out to be Russian Mafia. Wing brings the matter to a successful conclusion when he rids the county of both the small town thief and stud and the Russian gang without fanfare or the need for arrests. In the meantime he manages to save his marriage and his career, by being elected Sheriff for the 8th time. The storyline plays second fiddle to the development of Wings charac... moreter and his relationships with the supporting cast. The dialogue, with its humour, displays similarities to that of Kinky Friedman or Elmore Leonard. In Sheriff Wing, Freeman has created a likeable character who could run and run if he so wished.
review 2: For such a short book, this novel is densely packed with imagery and pathos. Told from the perspective of local sheriff Lucian Wing, this tale of small town crime with big city implications is a deft character study. I was reminded of No Country for Old Men, but this tale was less dark (though no less gripping) and used wry humor to soften the building tension. As Wing unravels the crime, local troublemaker Sean makes waves in both the community, Wing's marriage, and in the case itself. The ending is superb, the writing crisp, and the characters deep- highly recommended with a definite 5 star rating. less
