review 1: Set in the aftermath of the French Revolution, under Napoleon's rule, Chief Inspector Roch Miquel must navigate shifting political and personal alliances to solve an attempt on Napoleon's life. His superior, formerly his champion, has put Roch's father in prison and will deport him if Roch cannot jail the culprits. There is a deep and tangled romance in the mix, and lots of period detail. An afterward details fiction from fact, and notes that the search for these assassins is known as the first modern police investigation. Excellent writing as usual for the author, authentic detail, and a tense and excellent plot.
review 2: This one was very enjoyable. I knew nothing about this historical event, so I felt like I got a bit of a history lesson along with a sw

I felt that what was lacking was a fleshing out of the relationship between Roch and Blanche and Roch and Alexandrine. His feelings for them seemed a bit over-the-top from the little bit of interaction we got to see between them. It also ended pretty abruptly. I liked the historical note that was basically an epilogue for the real historical personnages, but I was dying to know what happenned to Roch, Alexandrine, Blanche, and Roch's father. I felt a bit jipped, like the author threw in the towel once she got to the end of the main storyline. Overall, though, a quick and enjoyable read. less
