2017 in Books

Looking back on 2017, I’m going to start crunching some data for some of you junkies out there. (Personally, I love stats and charts so here you go.) I read a total of 95 books!

Please excuse my rookie Excel and screenshot skills.

Looking back at all of this, it actually surprised me that I read so many indie books last year, although that’s not surprising given that I’ve been doing a freelance/ghostwriting gig with reviewing indies.

The issue I have had with the gig though is that the quality of the books is very uneven and sometimes frustrates me more than anything else. I’m going to make a commitment to read good books on my own time and try to be a little more picky, especially if I keep up this current gig.

Otherwise, it seems that I read science fiction the most(not a surprise), although I think fantasy and non-fiction to be the runner-ups a surprise.

Overall, I think I didn’t do a bad job, although I’m sad that I didn’t read books that I have meant to. I did find some new favorite authors though, and some of my new favorite books were brought to my attention this year. Here’s a short list of some notable reads I had this year:

Binti & Home by Nnedi Okorafor – Science Fiction/Afrofuturism

Deep Work by Cal Newport – Nonfiction/Self Improvement

Silence by Shūsaku Endō – Literary/Catholic fiction

A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness – YA/Fantasy

Arkwright by Allen Steele – Science fiction/Hard Sci-fi

We Come Apart by Sarah Crossman and Brian Conaghan – YA/Poetry

All of these books made a mark on me throughout the year, so much so that I can still recall how I felt about them after I finished reading. Some of these impacted me like A Monster Calls, and others made me ponder long after I closed the cover like Arkwright. I reviewed some of these on the blog too, so I recommend visiting those posts as well.

I’ll be doing another post about what my goals are for the rest of the year, but that might have to wait until I get back from my last Winter Residency at Seton Hill and I bring home my MFA.

Until then, enjoy this photograph I stumbled on. Happy New Year!
