review 1: A quick read read on the bus home. Ryan is only nine but has been taking care of his younger brother for quite a while as his mum is always too drunk to do so. He is constantly in trouble too and tells everyone his dad is a policeman. After failing to get sober, the boys are taken to separate foster carers. Ryan doesn't give it a chance and as soon as he thinks his foster carer is asleep he slips out of the house and returns to his mum. The police soon turn up and she hands him back over saying it is for the best. He manages to dodge them and after spending a restless night with his friend, he goes to try and rescue his younger brother. He didn't think for one moment that his brother didn't want to be rescued, that his brother was glad of a lovely warm bed and hot never en... moreding food. He ended up going back to his mum, who told him that she was worried sick about him and was going to try really hard to beat the drink and she had employed a solicitor etc. Life was looking up. He did go back to his foster carer and discovered that his foster dad was actually a policeman and that if the judge allowed his brother could move in with them. Although we never know if he does finally return to his mum, we do know he is happy with his carers.
review 2: I fancied a quick read "for the road" (actually for the cross-trainer), and this short book served well in that respect, however, it left me wondering who her target audience is with this story; I feel it's too depressing, scary and foul-mouthed for children under the age of 12, and it's a bit trite for teen-agers. Knowing that the author has worked as a foster mum for many years, it obviously adds ample authenticity to the story which makes it even more depressing, really. less

OK...but I enjoy the books she wrote from her own perspective better.
