review 1: I haven't read a novel told in verse for so long, this came as a pleasant surprise, not what I expected but I'm enjoying it so far. I imagine Dev Patel as Sandeep and Freida Pinto as Maya.Māyā means illusion or more accurately a delusion. Though given two names as a daughter for two parents from different religions, she always favored the name her Hindu mother has given her "Maya". Her Sikh name given by her father is "Jiva" which means soul.Maya is a Canadian, with an Indian family, a Hindu mother who commits suicide because she misses India and a father who plucks her from all that is a familiar and thrusts her into a 1984 war between Sikh and Hindus where she is orphaned and lost.Sandeep is a desert boy, the moment he sees the silent sad Maya knows that she is his mir... moreage.The story is filled with love, hate, hope, despair, courage and weakness, grief and happiness. But the ending is bittersweet yet filled with hope.
review 2: The book came highly recommended and didn't disappoint. Powerful and captivating. The choice to use verse to tell the story really worked well as emotions were boiled down to their most basic and intense form -- it reminded me of what it feels like to be a teenager. The story is set in a period of India's history that I wasn't not familiar with and brought me even closer to Maya (the female protagonist and main narrator), who I'd already indentified with for being female, Canadian-born of immigrant parents, living with restrictions from a culture that seems so far away. I would advise not to read the back of the book or too many details about the plot. Instead surprise yourself and experience every momemnt as the story as it unfolds. less
