review 1: ***SOME SPOILERS***   I didn't like the starting at first, for some reason the writing seemed worse than in Legacy. It really sounded like it was written by an amateur, (Especially the "My best friend Ione, her blond waves adorably woven through a headband of scarlet berries, had playfully ambushed me") In fact I was reminded of my own writing, which, I find cringe worthy. Again, the over description of everything was prominent as it was in Legacy. ("A gust of snowflakes, harmless embers, and leaves that ought to have been dead at this time of year came floating around us." "strangle the infection as one might wring water from a rag" "a forceful but ill-conceived sweep of my arm" and some other examples that I'm sure you will notice upon reading)   But the development ... moreof the story was good, and the incident in the fourth chapter shocked the hell out of me and I really felt for Anya (if you've read the book you know what I'm referring to) And everything was pretty good and the pace of the story picked up as I read, but the last few parts of the book seemed unrealistic, when they were fleeing from Hastings. I was expecting Anya to do something drastic to go back for Zabriel, I mean, YOU JUST FOUND THE DUDE (who, according to tbe story is of a huge importance), how do you so easily accept the fact that you can't rescue him?    Of course there are good points as well. The author's creativity showed through the whole book, and I'm reminded once again why I enjoyed the Legacy series. Hopefully the next two books in the trilogy will be better than this one though, I didn't like this as much as I wanted to but the storyline is interesting enough that I want to see the story to its end.
review 2: 3.5 stars. I liked the plot of the book and the storyline, as well as the author's writing style. the problem that I had was that it was too long and rambling in places. The beginning held my attention, but then she and Shea start wandering the country and everything blurs together. They visit different cities and find themselves on different ships, but everything is too similar to stand out as separate parts of the journey. This book is over 500 pages and could stand to have lost at least 150 of them. That being said, the ending grabbed my attention and sparked interest in the next book and the overall plot was intriguing.I received a complimentary copy of this book through Netgalley and am providing my honest, unbiased opinion. less
