review 1: This is a graphic novel memoir by CeCe Bell, who became deaf around the age of 4, after a childhood illness. She is fitted with a hearing aid, attends a special school for deaf children, then is eventually integrated into a regular public school for hearing children. CeCe has some difficulties feeling normal, while trying her best to read lips and understand classmates' banter. She discovers certain superpowers with her hearing aid, and nicknames herself El Deafo. But all CeCe really wants is to develop close friendships, which proves to be challenging with her hearing friends. Bell does a great job of illustrating (literally) the nuances and obstacles young deaf people face, while demonstrating humor and perseverance through the tumultuous young adolescent years. Qu... moreick read, ideal for 3-7th grades.
review 2: Touching graphic novel about a young girl's experiences growing up deaf from the age of 4. Very real feelings are portrayed honestly. Cece, the main character, grabbed my heart from the start. Difficulties of making friends and self consciuosness were spot on. Time period was 1970s-early 80s, I enjoyed the references to tv shows and musical groups, the corded phones, etc. Graphicnovel format made this a quick read, not sure about the choice of anthropomorpized rabbits as characters. But it worked for me. I just hope kids will like it, many important themes in this one. less

I loved this graphic novel! It's such a sweet story; it reminded me of Wonder by R.J. Palacio.
