review 1: 15 year old Tula Bane dared to question the motives of charismatic Brother Blue, the organizer of human colonists abandoning Earth for a better life on the planet Beta Granade. But Brother Blue never intended the colony to flourish, nor even to reach the planet, and when Tula discovers his secret, Brother Blue viciously attacks her, leaving Tula for dead on the docking bay of a space station. It is here that Tula grows up orphaned and alone, the only human in a hive of alien species on their way from one planet to another, or stuck on Yertina Feray, trying to collect enough currency to gain passage out of the joyless, sunless, and forsaken place. Tula learns to trade in the black market and scrapes by, obsessing over her plot to revenge the deaths of her mother and sister ... moreand bring down Brother Blue. In time, three young human travelers arrive, bringing the information and motivation Tula needs to set her plan in place if she plays her cards right and doesn’t lose the only chance she may have to return home and destroy her nemesis. But leaving Yertina Feray may not be in the stars, and Tula discovers there’s more to her alien companions than she ever imagined. Tula’s ordeal and consequent isolation have left her bereft of warmth, empathy, and other “human” feelings; she is a shrewd survivor that readers may find unsympathetic. In Boy Proof (2005), Castellucci created a smart, surly, alienated heroine who was funny and likeable. In Tin Star, Tula may be too hardened and one-dimensional to care about, but the author has created an interesting setting and lesser characters (especially the non-humans) that will keep readers awaiting the sequel. Recommended for sci-fi fans who like strong female protagonists (but Tula Bane is no Katniss Everdeen or Beatrice Prior).
review 2: I don't understand the thought process that goes through the authors mind when writing a book. Do they all of a sudden say " this book started off being a good book, why don't I totally ruin it!". Well that's what I think the author was thinking when they wrote this book. The beginning got off to a rough start, but started to progress in to a good idea, and I predicted the author would continue with the plot growing and have some great plot twist. Oh well spoiler alert, the book didn't grow in anyway, there was no climax, and the ending was a freak'n joke. I actually laughed because it was to awful. Don't read this book if you value your time. less

I thought this book had a lot of promise. My expectations were high. It was huge disappointment.

It is a small, quiet book, but the tone will stick with you months after you read it.
