Tales from Lovecraft Middle School
review 1: Middle grade readers who are a fan of series like Goosebumps are going to love Charles Gilman's Lovecraft Middle School Series. I was first impressed by the smaller sized hardcover at 5x7 inches. It's a very attractive book with a hologram cover showing a yearbook-type picture of a grey haired professor at one angle that changes to the red-faced horned demon you see pictured here when the book is turn at another angle. At 175 pages, including several full page illustrations and a glimpse at the second book, it's a very quick and enjoyable read. It's the story of Robert, who is settling in to his new school where he doesn't know anyone except for Glenn, who is your typical bully. While his mom is oohing and ahhing over the new facility with its digital signs and lockers and ... morehigh tech library, Robert discovers a secret attic filled with old books, a two headed rat, and a tentacled monster in his locker. There's also something strange about his Science professor, Garfield Goyle. Mysteries concerning ghosts, spiders, and a spooky mansion abound! Things really turn peculiar when a fellow student disappears. It all gets wrapped up with a satisfying and quick conclusion. There's lots of good "life lessons" to be learned in this book as well - including making friends at a new school and dealing with bullying. There's a bit at the end about facing your fears. Considering how much bullying is in the headlines these days and the effects it has on today's students, Gilman does an excellent job of handling it in a positive manner.I'm already looking forward to the next book (The Slither Sisters) in the series due out next January. There's also an interactive website mentioned in the back of the book which includes behind the scenes info with the author, an interview with the illustrator, and more. So, kids who are eager for more can continue the fun and enroll themselves at Lovecraft online while waiting for the next book! Kudos to Quirk Books for picking up this great new series!
review 2: This book was just so incredible! Funny, creative, creepy, and so well-written. I received it in the mail today and decided to read through the first few pages just to get a feel for it, but ended up finishing the book in one sitting because I couldn't put it down! Even though this is for middle-school kids, I am a 24-year-old and just devoured it! It felt like a cross between Goosebumps, Buffy and A Series of Unfortunate Events. And the illustrations were so beautiful too! I can't say enough good things! I absolutely cannot wait to read the rest! less
