review 1: First read this when I was quite young and it had an effect on me The story of a young couple about to get together, then things start to go wrong and they can never quite get together again... until in old age they do finally find each other but he's become a priest so they can't marry. So, they basically just live closely together, she dies and he goes on to be a great philosopher and the writer reveals his famous name at the end, Erasmus. It was the original never, ever giving up story and very sad as the Victorians liked their novels

... moreporary in outlook. It was a book my father chose to have us read,so I gained insight into him as well. Perhaps because of this nostalgia, as well as that it was entertaining, I thoroughly enjoyed the book. less
