review 1: The back cover of this book compared it to Donna Tartt's "The Secret History" which does a disservice to Ms. Tartt's extraordinary achievement. "The Twisted Thread" started well, and I enjoyed how Ms. Bacon created a cast of characters who each have a different relation (and thus reaction) to the exclusive NE prep school that is the book's setting and the murder that takes place there to start the book. Ms. Bacon's problem is that she assembles this wonderfully interesting cast, and then paint-by-numbers the "mystery" (which is fairly easy to figure out) in just under 375 pages. The book would have been better served had the author spent some real time and energy into developing the complexity of the living characters (not to mention the dead) as well as the traditions of... more the school that hold everyone-- student, alumni and townie-- in their thrall. It ultimately felt more to me like an outline of what could have been a really great book rather than a really great book.
review 2: Meh. That's how I feel. It wasn't bad, by any stretch of the imagination, but it wasn't great. I found that there were a lot of characters introduced here and there, without any seeming rhyme or reason... which made it confusing and laborious to read. I also think it took a really long time to solve the mystery. By the end, I was reading just because I wanted to know who did it and why, not for enjoyment. less
