review 1: I felt this book very strongly. I really wanted Stephen to be able to have a shower and change out of those pants, to be able to be comfortable in his life, to stop finding himself in such awful, misunderstood (often by himself) corners. To be able to stop and breathe and be OK about being him. Poor Stephen. Sometimes I want a beer and the quiet of an empty room in just the same way. I had to cry on the train while reading the ending. It's perfect.
review 2: Are you an animal person? I am, and I'm not. I like them & prefer them wild, existing as they are & I'll admire them by observation. I do not want to own them, or look after them, or mollycoddle them (despite my regular requests for a baby rhinoceros as a Xmas / birthday present). Thus is the lead character
... more (minus, most likely, the baby rhinoceros thing, lacking, as he does, whimsy in his genes). He's an observer, not a participator, & Charlotte Wood, through him, observes the human condition keenly. less

More like a wankfest of the author's observation than character development. Very flat story.

I have one complaint about this book - it wasn't long enough.

Cold. But intricate themes and a great climax.
