review 1: I have to admit, this book reminded me of a celebrity cookbook. It seemed to be mostly stuff I'd seen before, without any real story, like a celebrity cookbook--a book written for the sake of writing a book. On top of that, the actual text was pretty badly edited. I was reading a first printing, but the typos were noticeably excessive, several of the figures were arbitrary or even unlabelled, and there were "sidebars". Why not just fit the sidebar info into the text? Overall, seemed like a disposable book, written just because someone thought they could make a buck or get famous or something.

... moreat we have as many neurons in our brains as there are stars in the Milky Way? No wonder our house is crowded! We have seven galaxies crammed in here! Also, 40-85% of standing metabolism of small children (ie babies, toddlers) is taken up in brain development. Also, we know that our ancestors met up with other hominids because they gave us head lice. Also, Neanderthals split from us, yet got back with us, because many of us have Neanderthal DNA. The ending chapters seem speculative and sketchy and I’m inclined not to take them seriously, but the rest of the book is fascinating. less
