review 1: Larry Doby was the first African-american baseball player in the American League and this book tells the story in an interesting way.It is about a boy named Homer who was told he couldn't play baseball because he was black. So, he is hoping that his favorite player, Doby, can prove doubters wrong. Most of the book accounts Homer and his father listening to Doby become the hero in the world series. They talk about how this is going to change things and is a big moment for black people everywhere. This book seems very historical accurate and explains civil rights issues in a way a kid would unterstand. Great read for a young baseball fan or someone learning about freedom and civil rights.
review 2: Theme: Civil Rights, BaseballI was drawn to this story because of t
... morehe baseball player on the cover and knowing my second grade boys who are my reluctant readers I knew they would love this. After reading the story I am positive I will have some of them hooked!I love how the story puts you in the room with Homer and his dad as they listen to the baseball game on the radio. Great anticipation for what will happen both in the game and with how Larry Doby changed the game of baseball. A great historical note is included in the back of the book that highlights the facts in the story and adds more information as well as a bibliography.A great read aloud for when we talk about the Civil Rights movement to talk about the influence one person had on the game of baseball. less
