review 1: CATEGORY: POETRYDeath Coming Up the Hill is a historical fiction novel written in haiku. It’s 1968, and to 17-year-old Ashe, it feels like the world is crumbling. MLK Jr. has been killed, Senator Kennedy has been killed, and hundreds are being killed in Vietnam every day. To add to the global and national tension, Ashe’s peace-loving mother and strictly traditional father are at odds. Soon he meets the new girl, Angela, a hippie from California who helps him come to terms with the death all around him. He is forced to make decisions in a world that seems impossibly confusing. Meticulously written verse, each syllable in the book represents the death of a U.S. soldier during 1968, a poignant reminder of a war that many wish they could forget. I absolutely loved this boo... morek! It was simple, but powerful. I would recommend this for ages 14-18.
review 2: The haiku format makes the book a quick read, but I think it deserves a slow-down read. The haiku sets up a tone and rhythm that make their way into the lives of the characters, kind of combination of objectivity and sensitivity combined. I liked how the narrator's was able to navigate both parents' lives and perspectives. Overall, a moving story about some very complex issues and interesting people. less

Powerful, powerful. The war in Vietnam and a war at home. Tears, tears.

Cool idea overall. It did become a little monotonous by the end.
