review 1: A good read but also a strange one. The story is about Quinn Walker returning home after the first World War and trying to 'set right' the murder of his sister Sarah. He meets and befriends an orphan girl Sadie Fox, who is the same age as his sister at the time of her murder. The story is very well written and I liked the character development, however at times I was not sure if things were real or if this was a ghost story - maybe that is a strong point for the novel. A good read and the novel is short which I think kept it from being too confusing/muddled for me.
review 2: At times I was tempted to give up when the characterization in this novel, even though it's done in a magic realist style, verged on the ludicrous. The conversations the protagonist has
... more with his dying mother were a bit absurd and the lack of detail as to how these characters actually existed (he walks through the Australian bush for days eating only sandwiches?)but by the time I got to the end it all seemed to wrap up neatly into a fable-like denouement. less

Excellent book very atmospheric and brooding, not a happy subject but fascinating nonetheless.

Would have been a 4 were it not for the rushed ending.

Started great, didn't enjoy the last quarter.
