review 1: I wish this story was set entirely in the 17th century, as those parts were a hundred per cent more compelling than the present-day Cambridge parts. There was enough intrigue and counter-intrigue in the historical parts, and the additional Cambridge intrigue was entirely unnecessary. I'm not opposed to this kind of a plot, even. I love campus novels! I thought it would be like Possession: professors teaming up and solving historical puzzles/mysteries. But good god Andrew and Claire were so colourless and dull that I barely resisted skipping over those parts entirely. 3.5 stars for the wonderfully written historical portions.
review 2: I am giving this book the benefit of the doubt. I didn't realize that it was the 2nd in a series, and feel like perhaps some of
... morethe things that I felt were missing (like more in depth character and relationship development) were actually probably present in the first one. On it's own, this is more of a 3 - 3 1/2, and I am reserving the right to come back and change my mind after I go read the first one... but overall, I found it enjoyable. less

Loved it - my favourite genre to read, being part of present day unravelling the past.

Great, but skip paged 338-339... so unnecessary for a great book.
