review 1: 'In and Out of Step' possesses all the ingredients of a great Australian novel. It was a compelling read. The characters stepped off the page and became real for me. The writing style pulled me into the story so I was there in my imagination. I haven't loved a novel like this one for a long time. In some ways the writing style and layering of perspectives reminds me of Austen because the point of view shifts from inner thought to dialogue to situational arena, and embedded messages underpinning the story are replayed and examined from several standpoints. It's the sort of novel you read more than once.
review 2: In and Out of Step has been an interesting & somewhat challenging read. I really enjoyed the glimpses into Australian culture (back in the 80's) altho
... moreugh the issues the book covers are/were relevant everywhere. The story itself was fairly intense & required some actual thinking, which hasn't been the case with some of the books I've read lately. I did find the sudden changes in scenes or speakers to be abrupt & occasionally had to take a moment to realize it was someone else speaking & that the subject had changed. The last 1/3rd of the book was difficult to put down, in fact i stayed up until 1:30 am to finish it (so was a little tired at work today). I also enjoyed the song references & was happy to rediscover Mungo Jerry's "In The Summertime". less
