review 1: Soo Min has just moved from Korea to live with her new American family. Her new surroundings seem strange and a little frightening. As Soo Min begins to learn English and adjust to her new home, she finds comfort and familiarity in her friendship with the family cat, Goyangi¬. One morning, Goyangi escapes out the front door, and Soo Min worries about her friend. When the cat returns home at the end of the day, Soo Min is overjoyed and speaks her first English word, “Goyangi home.” This beautifully illustrated adoption story offers an honest and reassuring message to adopted children and their parents on both the joys and the difficulties of adjusting into a new family. Johnson’s full-color illustrations are a blend of paper collage, acrylics, and oil paints. ... moreHis use of Korean words in the images throughout the picturebook provides a visual bridge of language. This book is recommended for multicultural families, especially those with adopted children.
review 2: A young Korean girl is adopted by an American family and brought to live here knowing very little English and her parents know even less Korean. She becomes attached to the family cat and when the cat gets lost she is very unhappy. My assistant is Korean and was very interested in the Korean text incorporated into the pictures on each page. I think the story might be too much of a niche story to have mass appeal. less
