review 1: Author Christopher Bram is upfront from the beginning that with this book he is only trying to cover gay male writers because to include lesbian writers would make for a very dense book and is outside his expertise. Bram also makes attempts to address race within the book a good deal, but fails to talk about enough non-white writers to really call this a definitive work. Perhaps that is because Bram himself is white and did not read enough non-white gay writers to feel he could do justice to that discussion, but it is the one serious drawback to an otherwise excellent history of gay U.S.ian writing. It is sad to realize that the only way to read a solid book that does justice to QPOC writers is to find one by a QPOC author. I was shocked, especially, to see Miguel Piñero ... moremissing from this book. While this book is a truly engaging & important telling of the history of gay literature and writers in the 20th century in the U.S., that oversight seems huge.
review 2: This was a good book, a quick whip through 60 years of gay (male) literature. It's readable & gossipy without being total pulp (that would be fun too). It became somewhat mechanical as it went on: decade, what vidal/Isherwood/white/Maupin was up to, regurgitate a bunch of reviews, bash Larry Kramer, move on to the next decade. The 90s section was especially thin, basically just Tony Kushner & he called Michael Cunningham handsome a few times. Worth a read & a good jumping off point if you want to have a high level view of gay lit. less
